An intensive correction order is another type of sanction in our society. It is a sanction involving the treatment and supervision component and a custodial component. There are numerous conditions regarding an intensive correction order. The offender cannot commit another offence while on order; there is supervision twice a week, attendance at a correction centre for 12 hours a week, community work for 8 hours a weekend and counseling. If the individual breaks any of these conditions they can be imprisoned for the remainder of the order. The main aims of an intensive correction order are deterrence and rehabilitation. It discourages the individual from re-offending but also helps the individual change and resume a normal life. The intensive corrections order is highly effective on our society as it not only punishes the individual but gives them every opportunity to get their life back on track. Attendance at a correction centre, supervision and counseling will help the individual get his/her life back on track and as a result the society becomes safer. In conclusion, there are many types of sanctions, each with their own set of potential aims to help the society and the individual. Two sanctions are imprisonment and an intensive correction order. Also, any equipment which had a height exceeding the safe clearance was not to be taken below the sagging live power lines (Kiessling et al, 2014). Furthermore, the company should have ensured the work was under supervision to guarantee that the safety precaution was adhered to. The company could have avoided the safety breach by eliminating the danger via diversion or isolation. The company could have requested for diversion of the overhead powerlines clear of the work area or ensure that the powerlines are dead as the work progressed (Bhattacharya, 2014). If the powerlines were diverted the truck would not have come into contact with the wires. On the other hand, if the wires were dead the driver would be alive. 2. Michael Booth who was a truck driver died after the tip of his truck hit hanging power lines in a compound that was used by Canberra contracting firm and was electrocuted. Lack of warning tag on the work site and little documentation for particular risk assessment, for instance, powerlines made the magistrate conclude that the company was guilty. It was fined $1.1 million for safety breaches. 3. Safework clearly states that an employer or an individual running an organization or a business is responsible for the safety and the health of the workers, volunteers, and contractors while at work. In addition to that, under chapter 4, part 4.7, division 7, the new safe work legislation is crystal clear on electric hazards presented by overhead and underground power lines (NSW, 2017). It states that a firm who is carrying out abusinesstransaction at the workplace has to ensure that no person, plant or anything comes into close contact with an overhead electric line. Also, if it is not practical to ensure safe distance to a plant, an individual or a thing, then risk assessment should be conducted. After that, control measures which are consistent the risk assessment should be implemented (Lam, 2014). In this case, the safe work regulationsshow clearly that the risk was obvious and could have been avoided. Therefore, the firm was found guilty under safe work laws and fined to reso lve the issue according to the law. 4. The court should also have held the power company responsible for the risk of death and serious injury and also not correcting low-slung power lines conveying 11,000 volts.According to Albert Hallowell, electrical companies are supposed to consider strategies for preventing accidents and deaths by ensuring that overhead power lines are within a safe height (2013). In this perspective, the court should have considered the fact that the owner of the power lines posed a greater hazard to every individual that was working on that site (AmicucciSettino, 2017).It was sad to see the power company not being charged with theinstallation of power lines to such a low height yet the latter is aware the power lines can become loose as a result of expansion. 5. If I was working in such a workplace, I would have appealed the case and ask the industrial court not to impose restrictions and fines on the company. In spite of the firm safety breaches, the power company would have shared the blame. The power company should have erected warning posters on such a site to warn individuals and drivers to mind the height of their equipment or vehicles (Shelton, 2014). Also, I would have appealed the case due to the fact that the power company did not consider some of the safety measures and failed to evaluate such a great risk during installation. However, I would have accepted the mistake and ensure that such a hazard is eliminated in future. To prevent such an incident in the future I would ensure recruitment of a high-quality staff that is skilled in risk assessment and safety management practices. It was unfortunate that the safety officer was hired for the job simply because it was his fathers company.The staff would ensure that all the risks and potential hazards within the work site are identified, evaluated, eliminated or minimized (Suter, 2016). Additionally, I would ensure that all workers have gone through induction on safety issues. Lastly, I would ensure that there is direct supervision of the implementation of the safe work laws within the company. Conclusion To sum it all, Kenoss firm does not provide a safe environment for the workers. The fact that the company failed to train the workers on safety issues proves this point beyond reasonable doubt. Also, the firm did not put awarning sign on the job site to alert the visitors or its workers the danger posed by the low-hanging wires which carried 11,000 volts of electric current. The death of driver reveals the companys weaknesses. Electricity, in this case, was the hazard and could have been avoided by erecting a warning sign. The safe work resolved this issue legally whereby the company faced a heavy fine of 1.1 million dollars. However, in my point of view, the judgment was too harsh for the company considering that the owner of the power lines also posed a great hazard due to theinstallation of power lines to unsafe heights. If I was working in the company, I would have appealed the case and have the power company share the blame also. Nat Turner Essay Throughout the colonial period and the time leading up to the American civil war, one of the most important and controversial topics facing Americans was the idea of slavery. The notion of slavery is an odd and incredibly horrifying concept, that one man can own another man, or two men, or an entire family, just because of the color of their skin. No doubt the idea was racist and repulsive, but to many Men and Women in history, across the country and across the world, slavery was just a part of everyday life: they knew no different. So when those people who were being stripped from their homeland and brought over on ships to be sold at auction to the highest white bidder, began to question the sacredness of this terrible operation, it should have come as no surprise when a rebellion ensued like that of Nat Turner in South Hampton County, Virginia in August of 1831. Stephen B. Oates’s account of this gruesome slave rebellion was put into text in â€Å"The Fires of Jubilee: Nat Turner’s Fierce Rebellion. Oates’s description of this important fragment in American history comes in a prologue, four parts, and then an epilogue in which he tells the story of the time leading up the rebellion in South Hampton County, the rebellion itself and the time after it, along with his journey through the city and how he acquired his information for the book. In the conclusion of his piece, Oates establishes the claim that to many African-Americans, now and in the past, Nat Turner is somewhat of a heroic figu re and a freedom fighter in a dark period for this enslaved people. In his story, though he was trying to be as fair and equal as possible, he portrayed the white man as the wrongdoer, and the black slaves as the victims. But Oates’s claim that Nat is perceived as a â€Å"martyred soldier of slave liberation† is what separates this story from others. In my opinion, Oates is right on track. Nat Turner began his life as a slave, yet he was very intelligent, learning how to read and write and a young age, even with no former education. He grew up under several masters, including Samuel Turner whom which he gets the last name turner, but lived in South Hampton County for his entire life up until the rebellion. Nat’s life was that of any other slave living in this time period, working the fields, doing household chores, and even running errands for his master later in his life. Nat grew up incredibly religious and this quite possibly could have affected Nat’s decision to start a rebellion. Nat began to have â€Å"visions† and â€Å"sings from god† which were telling him that â€Å"the Serpent was loosened, and Christ had laid down the yoke he had borne for the sins of men, and that I should take it on and fight against the Serpent, for the time was fast approaching when the first should be last and the last should be first. † (The Confessions of Nat Turner) Leading up to the rebellion, Nat made sure that his plans stayed secretive, relying on a need to know basis for rallying information. Nat planned carefully and intelligently, strategizing every part of the insurgence that was to arise. Nat’s observance of a solar eclipse was his last clue to start the rebellion. A week later, on August 21, it began. â€Å"It was sometime after midnight. With a slight wind murmuring in the darkness, the slaves set out by the light of a torch, moving through the woods toward the Travis farm-the first target in their holy war against the white man. † (pg. 69) The rebellion ended with nearly 60 whites dead, including men, women and children, but the loss for the whites was much more than that. Nat’s rebellion showed that the â€Å"dumb negroes† surrounding the white society were not as dumb as once believed, in fact, some were quite brilliant, and Stephen Oates supported this idea throughout the book. Telling the story behind the scenes of how the insertion developed, and how the slaves could think for themselves and design the plan without the help of outside forces, an idea that many whites refused to believe in the time following the rebellion. Though Nat was finally captured, and in turn tried, then executed, the battle that he won was much greater than his own life. Nat is without a doubt a â€Å"freedom fighter† and although his fight ended in blood, it was necessary at the time to help to end the continuance of such a cruel and inhuman practice. Slavery in itself was much more horrifying than every white death that ensued following the rebellion combined. Oates’s assertion that Turner’s rebellion was the first war against slavery is incredibly accurate, except in one sense, one does not need to be African-American to agree with this claim. Though an African-American could view slavery as a much more personal subject, because it affected and enslaved many of their own ancestors, one does not need to be black to understand how terrible slavery actually is. Any single person who can assess slavery with an open mind and completely unbiased will see that the suggestion that one person can own another person solely because of the color of one’s skin is completely inhumane, and it’s absolutely no surprise that those who were being enslaved decided to react. Nat did in fact commit a crime, he started a rebellion that ended in the deaths of numerous innocent people, but he was only acting this way because of how whites were acting towards him. In some ways Oates is in fact creating a racial divide in his legacy of Nat Turner by saying that only African-Americans regard Turner as a hero, but he is not doing this intentionally. He is saying this with the mindset of a man living in the 1700’s when people hated slavery but only because they were worried about slavery affecting their own lives, and not seeing its overall immorality. This racial divide was not intentionally put into place during his work, but Oates still touched on the subject of a difference between blacks and whites. Still, in my opinion, Turner was only an enslaved, African-American man who wanted equality and decided to react with the same amount of hatred and severe measures as what slavery and white people had showed him. Nat was a freedom fighter indeed, he started the fight for freedom for blacks in America, he started the fight that would help to build a better country, and started the fight that would make America a much better place.
